As a preliminary to an actual "ping" it may be more tactful to have an intermediary approach a representitive of the person you desire to ping. Perhaps with a flower or or a brief poem for them to relay. If this is well recieved, some chaperoned exchanges and meetings could occur; Rowing on the lake together, a picnic, visiting a museum.

If all goes well, the intermediaries have no grounds to object and the subject appears amenable to pinging, then perhaps pinging may transpire.

Cream pies? Not at thirty paces! I thought it was suction-cup-tipped arrows.

I like the idea of cream pies better though. But we'll have to meet more like two or three paces from each other.

If you chose the weapon, that must mean that I challenged you. I'll have to think up a good reason. That's going to be tough.

But, wait! It's past noon, so I have almost another whole day to think of one. Now, how could you possibly have offended me?
